Ningaloo Reef Travel Guide

Spacer Ningaloo Reef Travel GuideWhile when most people first think of the words "Australian reef", their minds will no doubt instantly drift towards the Great Barrier Reef, Australia's west coast offering is no slouch itself, either.

Known as the "mini Barrier Reef", Ningaloo Reef is a highly accessible reef that lies a great deal closer to the coastline than the Great Barrier Reef does, with direct beach access often possible from multiple points along various stretches.

Ningaloo Reef offers three main drawing points for visitors - snorkelling, scuba diving and cruises to see the area's whale sharks. It's the quantity of whale sharks, incidentally, that help differentiate the region from its eastern brother; the largest species of fish in the ocean, these harmless yet visually striking ocean giants are always a highlight for those hitting the waters of Ningaloo.

Whale sharks are hardly the only marine creature that makes for some impressive sightseeing in Ningaloo Reef, however; other favourites such as manta rays, dugongs, dolphins and even humpback whales during their annual migratory season. Turtles of various kinds can also be found in abundance at Ningaloo, and their calm, docile nature makes them a favourite of underwater photographers and casual visitors alike.

Ningaloo Reef is listed as a World Heritage site in large part due to this wide variety of marine life; coupled with the numerous species and types of bright and colourful corals, and it makes for a quality dive experience on Australia's west coast. In addition, there are four major snorkel sites that can be found throughout the reef and that are popular with visitors - these include Sandy Bay, Turquoise Bay, the Oyster Stacks and Lakeside area, each of which offers a slightly different aspect of Ningaloo as a whole while also offering the chance to have a decent swim as well.

In short, if you're after a highly enjoyable reef experience yet not too keen to fight the larger crowds or face the higher level of commercialism that sometimes taint tours and holidays to the Great Barrier Reef, then Ningaloo Reef provides a more than adequate alternative, particularly if you're planning to explore some of Western Australia's other popular areas such as Perth, Margaret River or Broome.
