Explore the amazing Tasman Glacier on this combined helicopter flight/hiking tour package that showcases both Mt Cook and the Southern Alps terrain, featuring a guided trip along picture-perfect white ice and incredible views of the mountain and its surrounds from high above. The journey begins with a scenic helicopter flight to the Tasman Glacier as your experienced and friendly pilot-guides expertly guide you above the incredible alpine landscape at altitudes of up to 1.2km above sea level. Land in the mountains for a 2 hour adventure to experience the snow-and-ice covered terrain as your guide brings you on an interpretive trek highlighting all the amazing geography and natural phenomena that make this part of New Zealand so special.

Follow an easily undulating path along the mountain as you gaze down upon vast ice falls below, as your specialised crampon shoes provide a sure footing on this otherwise precarious surface. One the hike is over, re-board your helicopter for the return journey to Mt Cook Airport, flying close by the 1km high Hochstetter Icefall along the way. With all essential equipment such as glacier boots, socks, ice crampons, waterproof jackets and more provided, you'll have everything you need to simply bring your sense of adventure along for a wonderful alpine journey in the Mt Cook region.

Being able to do this experience was a dream come true. I literally bounced out of bed this AM with such excitement to get onto the glacier. Being in the Mount Cook Village alone and seeing Mt Cook peaking its head out amongst the clouds was breathtaking. The village has a small and lovely feel - you are literally surrounded by the Southern Alps…nature, nature, nature!! In my words “Food for the Soul”. It was only a short 2 minute drive to Mount Cook Airport where the trip departs. Upon checking in, they provided me with warm comfy socks, boots, gloves, jacket, beanie and even a backpack. I did come to the region super under-prepared so I was very grateful they were able to supply this for the trip. It allowed for a comfortable experience. We were guided into the helicopter which this particular helicopter seating 5 (including the guide). It was a 10-12 minute flight soaring above the glacier lake of Mt Cook, where we then landed on the Tasman Glacier. We fitted our crampons (shoes with spikes) and then off we set for our 2 hour hike. It was incredible!!!! it's not every day you get to walk on snow/ice built up over hundreds of years to form a glacier. We could see pockets in the glacier filled with water, air bubbles and more - it really was fascinating. The hike itself was not too hard at all. Our guide entertained us with carving out steps and walkways into the glacier for us to get over those “harder” areas, but all in all the walk is very easy! Just being able to marvel up at Mount Cook (the highest mountain in NZ) and Mount Tasman, to name a couple, was incredible! Learning about the glaciers and how they are formed etc was also really interesting!! It really was a magical experience and I would thoroughly recommend this to anyone who has ever thought about doing a heli-hike.
